BLOG #1 Please consider the following ideas as you blog this week. We know technology/digital literacy has to be taught (we can’t rely on the theory of the digital native) yet, given your already full curriculum, how will you begin to teach digital literacy? We are totally on the page about digital natives. I had to teach my 7th graders basic stuff all the time. Sure they could text like nobody's business, but they had no idea how changing search terms in Google might affect the results. The only reason they're so good at the tech people see them using is because they use it all the time, so they have practice.

I appreciate your comprehensive list of ways that you use tech- it reminds me of ways I use and also of ways that would like to try!

I agree 100% with your comment about not buying into the idea that all of our kids are completely comfortable with technology. More often than not, my kids are confused with the homework not because they don't have the Spanish skills to do it, but because "technology gets in the way" and they cannot figure it-out. It is absolutely imperative that all of us, teachers, do not assume they know how to use the devices or turn-in digital work. Like you said, checking for understanding every time we assign something new, is key. Thanks for the reminder.

I appreciate that you recognize your own time constraints, but have found a way to adapt what you are already doing by teaching digital etiquette and security. I think those are wonderful areas to focus on for teenagers who often forget or don't fully understand how to be safe online.
